Five Reasons to Enter the Teaching Value and Choosing Wisely® Challenge

We’ve feted the new year. Now it’s time to assess that list of resolutions.

Through the Choosing Wisely® campaign, Costs of Care and the ABIM Foundation have resolved to continue promoting high-value care by reducing waste and overuse in health care in 2015. As such, we’ve launched the second Teaching Value and Choosing Wisely Challenge to identify the most promising innovations and bright ideas in medical education that can be successfully implemented on a larger scale.

We invite medical students, residents, fellows and faculty to join us in that resolution and enter the Challenge. Here are five reasons to set this goal — and stick to it:

1. There’s still time. Entries will be accepted through January 15. See rules and deadlines for more info.

2. It’s quick and easy to enter. All you need to do is submit a 500-word abstract and fill out a brief form.

3. You might already be Teaching Value and Choosing Wisely. Your abstract can describe a project you’ve already implemented — or an idea for a project you believe could have promise.

4. There’s nothing to lose. If you win, you’ll be invited to present your work in person on an international stage at the American College of Physicians 100th Anniversary meeting this April in Boston.

Even if you don’t win, you can still participate in a learning network the ABIM Foundation hosts for Challenge participants and those interested in advancing stewardship initiatives. The network will convene clinicians across the country committed to improving health care delivery and feature monthly spotlights on leadership strategies in medical education.

We all win when health systems and educators share ideas on avoiding harm and unsustainable cost.

5. People will notice. Once you enter the Challenge and check that resolution off your list, don’t be shy. Tell people. You’ll stand out as an example to your peers and might inspire some friendly competition. Other professionals will also notice you are trying to use health care prudently and are choosing wisely. (The competition’s panel of judges is comprised of leaders in medical education.)

Take a few minutes to enjoy crossing one resolution off your list. And have a happy and healthy 2015!
